The NASCAR cup series is in Michigan this week for some high-speed racing on the 2 mile oval. We should expect some crazy restarts with the wide track and drafting possibilities with these cars. We will likely get a couple of dominators that will lead the majority of the laps. There is not a ton of fall off with the tires so track position will likely be key again this week and teams could implement some different strategies throughout the race.
Potential Dominators
William Byron
Tyler Reddick
Denny Hamlin
Chris Buescher
Byron has been really fast this season on the larger tracks and he again was one of the fastest cars in practice this weekend. He starts upfront so he will have a chance to lead laps from the start and should be a top contender throughout the entire race this week. A lot of the Toyotas looked really good in practice in Michigan and the car with the most speed seem to be Tyler Reddick in the practice session. Reddick was one of the fastest cars in lap averages, but he does start farther back in 12th so he may not get the chance to lead early in the race. He did get a flat tire in practice and may need some repairs to the diffuser so we will see if he has to start at the rear. Either way, I think he can make his way to the front as he did last year, winning this race and should be a good option for DFS. One of the other top Toyota drivers in lap averages in practice was Denny Hamlin and he starts up front. He should be a threat to lead laps early and should contend for the win this week. I think Hamlin and Byron will have a battle for the early leading of laps if they can get around Chase Briscoe on pole. Buescher is a great value potential dominator as he usually runs really well at Michigan and he showed some really good speed in practice. He should have the opportunity to run around the top five with upside to potentially lead laps and be a dominator this week.
Place Differential Plays
Christopher Bell
Ross Chastain
Brad Keselowski
Bell was another one of those Toyotas that had really good speed in practice as he had the best 5 lap average of anyone in the session. He starts back in 25th so he has a lot of place differential to move forward and should be able to rack up a good amount of points as he moves forward in the race. Chastain didn't show great speed in practice but he was really happy with the balance of his car and I expect him to be good in the race. He starts in 20th so he has some room to move forward and should run in the top 10 with upside for more. Keselowski has struggled all year qualifying and has found trouble in aa lot of races this year. But his teammates have had speed and the good runs so I expect that his luck has got to turn around soon and I think he can have top 10 potential in the race this weekend.
Cheap Options
Ty Gibbs
Daniel Suarez
Michael McDowell
Noah Gragson
Ty Gibbs is an interesting pick this week as he has struggled this season and has not paid off when using him in DFS. However, I really like him this week as Michigan has been one of his best tracks in his career and he was one of the fastest cars in practice. At only $6900 salary on Draftkings, he could be an incredible value play this week if he can stay in the top 10 and potentially be a threat for the win. Suarez has not been good in qualifying as of late and he again had another stinker as he starts 35th at Michigan. Luckily he has raced a lot better and can only move forward, so he should get place differential points and I would expect him to have the potential to run around the top 20. McDowell has had the opposite problem as he usually qualifies really well, but this week he did not and starts back in 32nd. That gives him a lot of place differential potential and the Spire cars have had a lot of speed recently so he should have top 20 potential for the race. Gragson had solid speed in practice but is another that starts way back in 29th. He should move forward and be a good cheap option for this weekend in Michigan.
Erik Jones
AJ Allmendinger
Some other options that may be a little less owned is Erik Jones and AJ Allmendinger. They both start mid pack so they have less place differential than some of the other options but they both have been running really well lately and I would not be surprised to see that carry into this weekend. I think they both could have top 15 potential and be solid options for this weekend at a lower ownership than the guys starting in the very back.
